Review and Reflect

At the end of the year, we find ourselves reflecting on the ups and downs of what has happened over the last 12 months. It's a great time to evaluate what is working for us, and what still needs work. But we shouldn't attempt this without allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal His perspective. With that in mind, here are a few questions that can help us take an honest look at things.

What am I most thankful for? What are the things I would consider to be victories for 2022? This isn't victory over an opponent, but victories within our personal lives. Sometimes even being grateful for the little things will be a springboard for the Lord's blessings. Let's develop a lifestyle of gratitude.

What prayers did God answer? You may have used text messages or emails to send prayer requests to friends and family so you have a record of those things. It's good to review the year and be thankful for every way God has demonstrated His faithfulness.

In what ways did I grow spiritually this past year? What fruit do I see in my life? What spiritual gifts do I see? Sometimes we can look back and see a new way we stepped out in faith, or maybe served in a different way. It may be beneficial to ask a few trusted friends to help you see what you cannot.

How did I fall short in the past year? In what way can I walk in repentance? Did I develop any bad habit that needs to be corrected? Did I lose spiritual focus? This is not a time to beat yourself up, but it is an opportunity to grow. We cannot overlook sin or any wrong decision, but when we walk in humility and submit to God, He is quick to forgive and restore. We can be cleansed and reconciled, and walk in overcoming power.

What did I learn in the past year? What did God teach me about Himself? If I received any revelation about Him, it's my responsibility to steward it and my responsibility to remain teachable. I must keep my heart in a position of humility to listen and receive from the Holy Spirit.

Who helped me in the past year? Who encouraged me? Thankfulness keeps us humble. Take the time to remember the wise counsel you have received. Recall any loving correction and encouragement you may have received from those in your life.

What should I have done differently? How do I learn from my mistakes? Even though we cannot go back and change things, we can learn from any past situation. Hopefully, we can partner with the Lord in this area and embrace the grace that He willingly gives us. It's good to remember that He doesn't condemn us in our mistakes.

What do I believe God is saying to me for this coming year? This is a great time to pray about goals and desires for the new year. Ask Him to give you His heart, and His plan. Whatever the dream may be, hold it lightly. Surrender it to Him. And remember He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above and beyond what you could ask or think.
